Club Soccer Closes Out Inaugural Season - The Montclarion

First women's club soccer team ends season with win

- By Levon Syers, Staff Writer

The season closer for the Montclair State University Women?s Soccer Club proved to be quite fruitful as they went on to defeat Fordham University with a final score of 3-2 at West Side Park in Newark this past weekend. The game marked the end of their debut season, based within the Northeast Division of the newly established Women?s Region One Collegiate Club Soccer League (WROCCSL).

Both clubs came into the game with an aggressive edge, an edge that lasted up until its final seconds. Nicole Cartier and Moira Anthony were able to score the two goals needed in the second half in order to pull in front of Fordham, and with the competition unyielding, defensive strategy was introduced to secure the win.

Considering that this is their very first year, the win against Fordham University?a club unbeaten in the past two years?has proven to be the season milestone and a subsequent source of inspiration for everyone on the Red Hawks? roster, including club founder Kristen Maday.

Up until this year, sophomore Kristen Maday had been working on starting the Women?s Soccer Club at MSU. After the long and arduous process leading up to this season, the win seemed to be an especially gratifying one for her. She had the following to say regarding the season overall, ?I was told coming into this that the first year would be hard. That was true. Obviously, I wanted to win, but mainly I wanted to play again and provide this mentality for the other girls as well. My expectations for next season are set high. After seeing us all perform against Fordham, I know we can beat the majority of the other teams. We have a bunch of talented girls that work well together.?

Though the club ended their season with a 2-3-1 record, Maday is incredibly optimistic regarding their future. ?Montclair State University Girl?s Club Soccer has people who have a whole lot of desire to work hard, play and win. I am already planning next season and am extremely hopeful to see what it has to offer.?

Sophomore Moira Anthony also had positive thoughts regarding the season and her new teammates: ?This is the first year that Girls? Club Soccer team has existed, so I am happy to be able to watch it grow as an organization. I just wanted to have fun, and that is exactly what I did. This team was such a great group of girls and we worked well together.? Working well together seemed to be the key development for the Red Hawks this season, which personified in the win against Fordham.

Graduate Student Julie Kreger, who works at Campus Recreation?s Club Sports Department, shares the girls? hope and excitement for the club. Being a recent addition to Campus Recreation, Kreger has helped organize many of the Club Sports events this fall, and expressed her respect for the teams and players that dedicated time and effort into creating a great college environment. ?It is occasionally difficult to get a new club up and running, but many of them this year have great leaders who have put in a lot of time and effort in making their clubs into a success.?

Kreger also commented on the trajectory of Club Sports, which has seen a large increase in activity this year. ?I think Club Sports will continue to grow throughout the year and we will have at least four new clubs by next year, if not more. I am very optimistic in having the awareness of Club Sports grow around campus and having more and more students become involved with the program.?
