Syrian activists say fighting in Aleppo kills 5

AMMAN, Jordan (AP) ? Fighting between Syrian rebels and government forces killed at least five people in the embattled northern city of Aleppo, activists said Sunday.

The London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the dead included a man who has been shot by a sniper near the city's medieval citadel earlier in the day. Several homes were also destroyed in the violence, the Observatory said.

The country's commercial capital and largest city, Aleppo is home to some 3 million people and was once a bastion of support for President Bashar Assad. But the city has been hit by fierce fighting since rebels launched an offensive there in July.

Syria's state news agency says Assad's troops have carried out a "successful operation" in western Aleppo against "terrorist gatherings" ? a reference to the rebel Free Syrian Army. SANA said several rebels had been killed or wounded in the violence, but gave no other details.

On Saturday, a fire sparked by battles between Assad's troops and rebels tore through Aleppo's centuries-old covered market, one of the best-preserved bazaars in the Middle East. It was the worst blow yet to the city's historic center and to a UNESCO World Heritage site in Syria.

The heightened violence in Aleppo drew criticism from the city's industrialists of "insufficient" government protection provided to factories and other businesses in the area.

Fares al-Shihabi, head of Aleppo's Chamber of Industry, told Syria's pro-government al-Watan daily that several previous calls on the government for increased protection against "daily armed attacks" on industrial estates "have gone unanswered."

In response, the chamber was forced to hire guards around-the-clock to protect the businesses against attacks by looters, he added.

Rami Martini, chief of Aleppo's Chamber of Tourism, warned of the vulnerability of tourist sites in the area. He told al-Watan that the violence in Aleppo has "dealt a blow in every sense of the word" to the country's tourism sector.

The Aleppo market, a major tourist attraction with its narrow stone alleys and stores selling perfume, fabrics and spices, had been the site of occasional gun battles and shelling for weeks. But amateur video posted Saturday showed wall-to-wall flames engulfing wooden doors as burning debris fell away from the storefronts. Activists said hundreds of shops were affected.

The souk is one of a half-dozen renowned cultural sites in Syria that have become collateral damage in the civil war.

Elsewhere in Syria, the Observatory for Human Rights said a "strong explosion" rattled the northeastern city of Qamishli on the Turkish border. It said the explosion appeared to be caused by a booby-trapped car but that it was not immediately clear whether there were any casualties.

The Observatory said a handful of civilians were killed in violence in Homs and other areas across the country. In the restive southern town of Daraa ? the city where Syria's anti-Assad uprising began with peaceful protests in March 2011 ? tens of homes that belong to rebels were destroyed in the town of Mezereeb, the group added.

Pictures show mystery Android tablet in North Korea; Google takes note

At an electronics trade fair in North Korea where approved technology was on display, a mystery tablet made an appearance. A picture shows Choi Cheol Min of Chosun Computer holding in his hands, what looks to be a tablet running Android on a 10 inch screen. The trade fair took place in the capital of Pyongyang, and information about the device is hard to obtain. There is a clue in the form of a box that reads Samjiyo, spotted in the background. This is a North Korean tablet introduced in June.Since North Koreans are not allowed access to the internet, we'd imagine that while Android is running the tablet, you are not going to find Google applications on board. And unlike the Amazon Kindle Fire, you probably can't purchase content. Speaking of Google, it seems that Google's Seoul office has taken a keen interest in the picture. Not that Google could do much about this because after all, Android is an open source OS. There would be a violation only if the tablet runs proprietary applications like Google Play or Gmail.

Another picture from the event shows U.S. dollars changing hands in the purchase of the tablet. So let's see if we get this straight. In North Korea, capitalism is taboo but they accept the fruits of it (U.S. currency) for a product with its technological roots in the states (Android). It's a crazy, crazy world we live in.

Jerusalem ? PM?s Camp Says NYC Trip Cleared Air with Washington

Jerusalem - Netanyahu returns satisfied after ?red line? speech to UN General Assembly; Canada?s Harper: Those who target Israel are a threat to free societies everywhere.

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu left New York for Israel Saturday night with aides expressing satisfaction that the key objectives of his trip ? clearly defining red lines on Iran and clearing the air with Washington ? were achieved.

?The first thing that he succeeded in doing was sharpening the message on Iran,? one source in Netanyahu?s entourage said of the prime minister?s speech Thursday to the UN. ?We were more specific about what we think should be the red lines, and that is important in framing the parameters of the debate.?

The official said that the visit, which included a phone conversation Friday with US President Barack Obama and a meeting Thursday with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, ?strengthened and enhanced our dialogue with the US administration over these issues.?

In addition, the official noted, Netanyahu?s UN speech and his red line on a rudimentary sketch of a bomb received ?almost unprecedented coverage internationally? and succeeded in putting the Iranian nuclear program ?at the very center of the international political agenda.?

It is more clear than in the past what Israel means when it talks about red lines, the official said.

Netanyahu, in an interview with Channel 1, said he believed that placing a red line in front of Iran reduced the chances Tehran would cross it. He defined that line in his speech as the point before Iran had stockpiled enough low-grade and medium-grade uranium to begin working on high-grade uranium and a nuclear detonator.

Defining where the red line is, he said, gave ?a great deal of legitimization? to those who might want to act if Iran crossed it.

The prime minister, in a Channel 2 interview, said he did not discuss an Israeli attack in his speech ? only that the red line had to be at a point before Iran completed the second stage of enrichment needed for a bomb. Regarding his comment that the Iranians could reach that stage by springtime, Netanyahu said this would happen only if they continued enriching at their current pace.

?But lets see if they continue,? he said. ?I think that placing a red line is the best guarantor to prevent the need for military action.?

Netanyahu clarified that in saying Iran would not cross the line until at least spring, he ?never gave up for even a minute Israel?s right to defend itself at any time. I think that right is clear and understood by everyone.?

He added that it was important to make clear to the international community that Iran was continuing to move forward on its nuclear program, and that if it wanted to stop the program it had to do so ?before the finishing of the enrichment process.?

Washington?s refusal to articulate its red line has been a source of public tension in recent weeks between Israel and the US. Netanyahu, however, said that teams from both countries were working at the highest levels to try to translate into practical terms the joint objective of preventing Iran from attaining a nuclear weapon.

The White House stressed on Friday, following the Obama-Netanyahu phone conversation, that the US and Israel were ?in full agreement? on preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon.

The two men discussed the coordination of their efforts and cooperation in dealing with Iran, according to a statement by White House press secretary Jay Carney.

While the statement did not say how long the conversation lasted, Netanyahu said it was a ?prolonged? discussion.

?The two leaders underscored that they are in full agreement on the shared goal of preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon,? the statement said.

The conversation was their second in three weeks, an unusually short stretch of time for two publicly announced calls. It comes after criticism of Obama for declining a meeting with Netanyahu while the premier was in the US for the UN General Assembly, and amidst discord between the two countries on how best to thwart the threat from Tehran.

Netanyahu?s comments to the UN Thursday and his comments that Iran would not cross his red line until at least spring suggested the timeline for any Israel action would not come until well into next year, after the US elections in November, reducing some of the immediate tension between the two countries.

?The temperature is lower than it had been,? an Obama aide said after the call.

The White House readout also noted that Netanyahu ?welcomed President Obama?s commitment at the UN to do what we must to achieve that goal.?

Netanyahu also spoke by phone Friday with Obama challenger Mitt Romney.

Romney, speaking to reporters on his campaign plane, said he and Netanyahu agreed that Iran must be denied nuclear capabilities but did not agree on specific red lines to confront Tehran.

?I do not believe in the final analysis we will have to use military action,? Romney said. ?I certainly hope we don?t have to. I can?t take that action off the table.?

Friday?s White House phone call followed a meeting between Netanyahu and US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in New York Thursday night. The meeting lasted one hour and 15 minutes and was entirely one-on-one, according to the State Department.

The pair held a lengthy discussion on Iran, and also discussed developments in the broader region and the Israeli-Palestinian peace process.

?It was an open, wide-ranging constructive conversation,? the State Department statement said. The Prime Minister?s Office released no information about that meeting.

Netanyahu also met Friday with Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, and praised Harper again for Canada?s recent decision to cut ties with Iran.

?I think that what you did, severing ties with Iran, was not only an act of statesmanship, but an act of moral clarity,? he said to the Canadian leader before the meeting.

Harper said Canada wanted to see a peaceful resolution to the Iranian crisis, ?and we work closely with our allies to try and alert the world to the danger this presents and the necessity of dealing with it.?

Later in the day, at the Appeal of Conscience Foundation?s annual dinner in New York, Harper said ?the appeal of our conscience requires us to speak out against what the Iranian regime stands for. Likewise, it requires us to speak in support of the country that its hatred most immediately threatens, the State of Israel.?

Harper said that while Ottawa does not sanction every policy Israel pursues, ?neither its existence nor its policies are responsible for the pathologies present in that part of the world.?

He was also mindful, Harper said, ?of a lesson of history, that those who single out the Jewish people as a target of racial and religious bigotry will inevitably be a threat to all of us. Indeed, those who so target Israel today are, by their own words and deeds, also a threat to all free and democratic societies.?

T-Mobile USA in $2.4 billion tower deal with Crown Castle

NEW YORK (Reuters) - T-Mobile USA, the No. 4 U.S. mobile provider, has agreed to sell the rights to operate 7,200 of its wireless broadcast towers for $2.4 billion to Crown Castle International Corp to help its parent Deutsche Telekom pay back debt.

Crown Castle has the option to pay another $2.4 billion to buy the towers outright from T-Mobile USA at the end of the lease term for each tower - between 2025 and 2048 - under the deal announced Friday.

T-Mobile USA, which is spending $4 billion on a network upgrade, has also been looking for ways to become more financially independent from its parent, which had tried to exit the U.S. market the year before.

The customer-losing U.S. operator has been struggling to stem customer losses as it has a tough time competing with bigger and smaller rivals.

It had been trying to sell its wireless towers since its proposed purchase by AT&T Inc failed last year due to regulatory opposition. It had looked into selling the towers in early 2011 before it started the AT&T process.

Deutsche Telekom declined to give specifics on the impact on its financials, except to say it would use the cash to pay back some debt.

Crown Castle said it expects the towers to generate about $125 million to $130 million in adjusted funds from operations before financing costs in 2013.

JPMorgan analyst Phil Cusick said while the price tag was at the high end of his expectations it was mitigated by Crown Castle's strong growth outlook for the assets.

Crown Castle also said that the towers will have enough space to accommodate at least one additional wireless service provider customer on each tower without significant incremental capital.

As part of the deal, T-Mobile USA committed to maintaining its communications facilities on the towers for at least 10 years with annual rent increase provisions tied to the consumer price index. T-Mobile's rent includes the rights to complete its current network upgrade on these sites.

"The deal is well structured to account for the inherent risks of purchasing a tower portfolio highly weighted to one carrier," Piper Jaffray analyst Christopher Larsen said.

Deutsche Telekom said the company had multiple bidders for the assets but declined to name them.

Analysts have said other companies that considered the towers included American Tower Corp and SBA Communications Corp.

Crown Castle shares fell 18 cents to $64.73 in morning trade on the New York Stock Exchange. Deutsche Telekom shares were down 1.1 percent in afternoon trading in Frankfurt.

UK services output bounces back in July

LONDON (Reuters) - British services sector firms grew at their fastest pace in over a year in July as activity recovered after a public holiday hit business in June, official data showed on Friday.

Services output rose by 1.1 percent in July, the biggest gain since May 2011, after a 1.5 percent drop in June, the Office for National Statistics said. Output was 0.7 percent higher than a year earlier.

The services sector makes up more than three quarters of British GDP, and Friday's data suggests the economy made a strong start to the third quarter, after contracting by 0.4 percent in the second quarter of the year.

July's month-on-month rebound adds to strong growth in manufacturing, making it likely that the economy will leave recession after three quarters of contraction.

The bulk of ticket sales for the London Olympics will be booked in August, when the majority of events took place, though some are included in July's figures.

The ONS also reported that output per hour across all sectors of the economy fell 0.9 percent in the second quarter, contributing to a 2.6 percent fall in productivity over the previous year. Unit wage costs rose 2.0 percent on the quarter, while unit labour costs edged up by 0.3 percent, the statistics agency said.

Britain's weak productivity since the financial crisis has been a major puzzle for the Bank of England, and potentially poses inflation risks when the economy recovers.

The ONS also said that following new international guidance, it was reclassifying the remainder of banks Northern Rock and Bradford & Bingley owned by the government as central government bodies rather than public sector corporations, as they were no longer actively trading.

This means that they will add to general gross government debt, with knock-on impacts on the key measure of public sector net debt targeted by Britain's government, back-dated to 2010.

The ONS said the changes would push up government gross debt by 53.4 billion pounds in 2010/11, reducing to a 37.4 billion pound increase in 2011/12.

The change will also reduce the general government deficit by 740 million pounds in 2011/12. The changes will appear in public finances data from early 2013 onwards.
