Verbatim versus Intelligent Verbatim Transcription

Verbatim transcription includes all verbal utterances contained in natural speech, including false sentence starts and each and every "eh", "ah", "er" or "um". Intelligent verbatim excludes these elements and therefore makes for a more coherent transcript. The examples below illustrate the difference between these two forms of audio transcription. An intelligent verbatim transcript looks like this: (Level 2) Yes, I think it must be the way the instruction is given that is the problem. I'm not sure but that's how it seems to me. David's instructions are clear and more ? concise. Most of the time he conveys his instructions in writing which helps a lot. Like for instance, last week David and Ken were both in the department meeting. After the meeting they had to communicate with their teams about what had happened in the meeting. So Ken just stood like - you know, at the top there by his desk and just shouted about the new procedures. But then David's style is different because he sat down and wrote an email to us. I received that email about 15 minutes later and the email said like all this stuff about the new procedures, like a bulleted list of the changes and what we're supposed to do now. Ja, I prefer that. I don't know how Ken's team cope with that. Later on Kelly - you know, she's in Ken's team - she came and asked me if I knew about the procedure changes and she asked me to forward David's email to her. The same paragraph as above in a verbatim transcript looks like this: (Level 1) Um yes, I think it - it must be the way the? - the um - the instruction is given that is the problem. And um yes, I'm not sure but that - that's how it seems to me. David's instructions are um - are um - clearer and more ? concise. He - most of the time he er um conveys his instructions in written - in writing which helps a lot. Like for instance um eh last week David and - and Ken were both in the department um meeting. After the meeting, you know, they had to talk - um communicate with their teams about the um - the - what had happened in the meeting, you know. So Ken just stood like, you know, at the top there by his desk and just shouted about the um, you know, the new things - procedures. But then David's style is um different because he, you know, he sat down and wrote a - an um email to us. I got - received that email, you know, about - what um - 15 minutes later and the email said like all this stuff about the new procedures, you know, um like a bulleted list of the changes and - and what, you know, we're supposed to do now. Ja, I prefer that but - um I don't know how David's - I mean Ken's team cope with that. Later on Kelly - you know, she's in Ken's team um she - she came and asked me if I knew about the procedure changes and um - she asked me to email - to um forward David's email to her, you know. As you will note from the above examples, intelligent verbatim transcription requires the transcriptionist to apply a degree of interpretation and discernment to produce a coherent transcript. While this would be helpful in certain circumstances, it might not be suitable for research that requires a level of discourse analysis or where the research methodology calls for additional levels of analysis. It would be best for you to speak to your research supervisor to ascertain which of these options would best suit your data collection and analysis requirements.
